Triton College Hosts Trunk-or-Treat in Space Event

Halloween celebrations are arriving early at Triton College with the third annual Trunk-or-Treat in Space event. Scheduled to take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on October 10, this free event will occur outside the Cernan Earth and Space Center located at 2000 5th Ave. in River Grove. Attendees do not need to make reservations.

The event features around 15 cars decorated in vibrant themes, stationed in the Cernan Center’s parking lot. Children will collect candy and other giveaways from these vehicles. Tina Lilly, director of Business Services for Triton College, mentioned that the initiative began three years ago and is organized in collaboration with the Alumni Association. The idea stemmed from feedback gathered from an alumni survey conducted by Triton.

“We wanted to understand what our alumni were interested in,” Lilly explained. “Many expressed the need for family-friendly activities that were both entertaining and complimentary. Trunk-or-treat events were gaining popularity, so we decided to offer it as a safe and straightforward option for families.” Alumni volunteers bring their cars and distribute treats to participants.

The Cernan Center provides an added attraction for trunk-or-treaters: a Halloween-themed space show lasting 15 to 20 minutes. “Costumes and space-themed fun are the focus of the Trunk-or-Treat in Space event,” shared Lilly. During the first two years, this event attracted over 500 attendees each time.

Attendees can also choose to attend laser-enhanced Planetarium shows scheduled at 11:45 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1 p.m., or 1:30 p.m. Kris Kovach McCall, director of the Cernan Center, noted, “We want everyone to experience what the Planetarium offers, so our 20-minute educational shows, created by Planetarium educator Jordan Jubeck, are available at no cost.”

The show blends astronomy with Halloween themes. “We aim to provide some entertainment while educating about celestial phenomena. We cover topics like the lifecycle of stars and inject a bit of fun with laser effects,” Jubeck stated. McCall added, “The Planetarium charms visitors of all ages, providing an intriguing experience regardless of age.”

Beyond the event, guests can explore the Cernan Center’s exhibit hall and the Star Store gift shop. McCall encouraged participants to take advantage of a special 10 percent discount on purchases at the gift shop during Trunk-or-Treat.

The event will proceed regardless of weather conditions. If it rains, activities will relocate inside the Cernan Center.
