Tragic Train and School Bus Collision in Belgium

A tragic incident occurred early on Tuesday at a level-crossing near Buggenhout station, approximately 14 miles from Brussels. The accident involved a train and a school bus at the Vierhuizen railway crossing in Buggenhout, resulting in four fatalities.

According to RTL TV, which cited Transport Minister Jean-Luc Crucke, the victims included two teenagers, the bus driver, and an adult accompanying the students. The collision also left two individuals severely injured.

Crucke mentioned that surveillance footage confirmed the crossing’s security barriers were in position at the time of the incident. The crash emphasizes the risks associated with Belgium’s extensive railway network, particularly at level-crossings.

Interior Minister Bernard Quintin expressed his condolences on X, stating his deep sadness over the event. Meanwhile, Belgian police spokespeople have yet to provide comments on the situation.

Belgium has a history of accidents at level-crossings. Data from railway infrastructure operator Infrabel indicates that five people lost their lives in similar accidents in 2025, marking the lowest figure since 2020.
