Tragic Rope Jumping Accident in São Paulo

A tragic incident occurred in São Paulo State, Brazil, resulting in the death of a 21-year-old woman, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, during a rope jumping activity. This mishap happened at the Ponte do Esqueleto, also known as the Skeleton Bridge, a site popular for such jumps located about 100 miles northwest of São Paulo city.

Rope jumping, unlike bungee jumping, involves a non-stretchable rope that swings rather than bounces the jumper. According to the police, Ms. de Freitas was launched from the bridge with no connection to safety equipment. Videos circulating on social media captured the moment when instructors lifted her over their heads, her arms outstretched, before throwing her from the bridge, which is almost 100 feet high.

The Civil Police of São Paulo stated that her harness clips were empty during the jump, as apparent from the footage. In contrast, earlier videos from the same location showed proper use of safety ropes with other participants.

Officer reports noted that Ms. de Freitas was receiving medical assistance when the police arrived, but she showed no vital signs.

The company behind the rope jumping activity faced scrutiny, with three individuals linked to the business being detained. The firm was not authorized to conduct jumps from the bridge, according to Brazil’s Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services. Following questioning, two of these individuals initially fled but were subsequently captured by the authorities.

It was disclosed that Ms. de Freitas was wearing a camera during the jump, but the device was missing when the police searched the scene. The instructors claimed ignorance regarding its location.

Ms. de Freitas was laid to rest in São Paulo State on the following Sunday.

Reporting assistance was provided by Leonardo Coelho.
