Tragic Incident Involving New Jersey State Police Officer Shocks Community

Lt. Ricardo Santos, a member of the New Jersey State Police who served in a prestigious unit responsible for the protection of dignitaries, has become the central focus in a tragic double murder-suicide case. The incident has raised serious questions about his conduct and judgment.

Lauren Semanchik, a veterinarian, experienced vandalism when her car was keyed. She suspected Lt. Santos, her former boyfriend, might be responsible. Semanchik reported the incident to the local police, expressing her concerns about Santos’s reaction to their breakup, as noted in the police report.

An officer reached out to Santos at 8 p.m. to discuss the matter. The officer advised Santos to refrain from any contact with Semanchik to prevent further escalation. Santos acknowledged the advice.

Seventy-four days later, on August 1, 2025, a severe tragedy unfolded. Semanchik and her new partner, Tyler Webb, were shot to death outside her Pittstown, N.J., residence. Lt. Santos was found deceased shortly after, with indications pointing towards a suicide. Prosecutors identify Santos as the sole suspect in the murders.

This marks an unprecedented situation where an off-duty state trooper is implicated in a double homicide within the history of the state police force. The event has shocked the region and cast a spotlight on law enforcement practices in which Santos had spent two decades.
