Tori Penso Makes History as First Female American Head Referee in Men’s World Cup

Tori Penso, a 40-year-old mother of three, achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first American woman to officiate as head referee at a men’s World Cup match.

While walking onto the field at Atlanta Stadium last month, which hosted the global football event, Penso noted an aura of grandeur. Mercedes-Benz Stadium, renamed for the tournament, appeared more imposing than before, even though its structure remained unchanged.

Minutes away from overseeing the group-stage game between the Czech Republic and South Africa, Penso felt the profound significance of her role. This occasion marked a major step for gender equality in sports.
