Tony Romo is on leave from his role as CBS’ lead NFL analyst following a recent arrest. CBS Sports announced the decision on Friday after Romo was suspected of DUI. JJ Watt will replace Romo alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson for CBS’ NFL broadcasts during this period.

Romo, aged 46, was arrested on July 23 while driving on Interstate 43 in Wisconsin. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office reported that Romo failed field sobriety tests and was subsequently detained. He has a court date scheduled for September 21.

The announcement by CBS Sports came after citations revealed an open alcohol bottle was found in Romo’s vehicle. Police stopped Romo for passing cars in a gore area, which separates interstate traffic from on-ramp vehicles. During the stop, Romo questioned what a gore area was.

Body camera footage showed Romo claiming he came from a golf course heading “to visit grandma and grandpa.” Police noted Romo had “red glassy eyes” and an “odor of an intoxicating alcoholic beverage.”

Romo attended high school near Milwaukee in Burlington, Wisconsin. As the lead game analyst for CBS since 2017, he has earned recognition following an NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys from 2004-2016. Romo holds a franchise record with 248 career touchdown passes, although Dak Prescott recently surpassed his career passing yards record.

JJ Watt joined CBS in 2023 and previously worked on “The NFL Today” before partnering with Ian Eagle. Romo’s first game of the season was scheduled for September 13, but CBS will now air a preseason game between the Bengals and Eagles on August 28.
