Tim Curry, widely recognized for his iconic role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the film Rocky Horror Picture Show, has died at the age of 80, according to his manager Marcia Hurwitz. Details about the cause of his death have not been released.
Curry gained fame with his portrayal of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in 1975. Fans of horror and mystery films also remember him for his performances as Wadsworth in Clue and Pennywise in the 1990 TV adaptation of Stephen King’s It.
Curry had been facing health challenges since 2012, when he suffered a major stroke that left him partially paralyzed. Born on April 19, 1946, Curry built a career spanning over five decades, with numerous roles in film, television, and theater.
His acting journey began on stage with the London company of the musical Hair. Later, he moved to Los Angeles to further his career in film and TV. Curry is also known for playing Rooster Hannigan in the 1982 movie Annie, acting with Carol Burnett and Bernadette Peters. Another memorable role included Mr. Hector, the concierge in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island (1996).
In 1991, Curry received a Daytime Emmy for his voice work as Captain Hook in the animated series Peter Pan and the Pirates. He earned three Tony nominations, the first in 1980 for Amadeus, the second in 1993 for My Favorite Year, and the last in 2005 for Spamalot.
Curry published his memoir Vagabond to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Rocky Horror Picture Show. In the memoir, he shared insights into his distinction between personal life and the roles he played, stating, “The distinctions between who I really am and who I’ve pretended to be as an actor have proven to be a source of great disappointment to some audiences.”
In a 2025 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Curry expressed his appreciation for acting, stating that it offered him “the freedom of being somebody else.”
