The Untold Story of Sue Lowther-Pinkerton’s Life in British Intelligence

Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton always knew his mother, Sue Lowther-Pinkerton, had an extraordinary life. Yet, there was a time she seldom discussed. After World War II, Sue joined MI5 and worked in British intelligence during the Cold War. She rarely shared details with her children.

Decades ago, while watching a documentary about the Cambridge spy ring, Sue made a rare comment. The documentary mentioned suspicions around Sir Roger Hollis, the MI5 director from 1956 to 1965. Sue, without pause from her knitting, dismissed the idea that Hollis was a spy. This moment provided her children a glimpse into her past.

Jamie and his sister learned about their mother’s intelligence work later in life. Jamie’s novel, “Beyond the Edge of Light,” draws inspiration from Sue’s life. The story’s central character, Missie, was inspired by Sue’s adventurous spirit.

Before joining MI5, Sue was involved in different aspects of military service. During World War II, she worked with the NAAFI and the Auxiliary Territorial Service. She later moved on to the Royal School of Artillery at Larkhill. Her intelligence career extended beyond MI5, as she worked in Army intelligence in Singapore, dealing with secret communications. She joined MI5 upon her return to Britain in 1951 and remained till 1956.

Sue’s personal life was equally vibrant. She received numerous marriage proposals but settled with Anthony Hull Lowther-Pinkerton, known as “Rumpty.” She managed the family with a calm demeanor, a trait Jamie fondly remembers. She also played an active role in post-war Britain, organizing the annual Poppy Appeal and delivering Meals on Wheels.

Jamie himself served in the royal household, working with Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. He described her as a wonderful presence with a firm spirit. She shared stories from World War I, reminding Jamie of his mother’s sharp memory and humor.

Jamie’s career included being a private secretary to Prince William, Prince Harry, and Kate Middleton. His bond with the royals extended to being a godfather to Prince George. His writing is deeply influenced by the remarkable women in his life, especially his mother. Jamie hopes Sue’s strength and individuality continue to inspire others.
