Cinerama Dome’s Upcoming Revival
The Cinerama Dome, a renowned movie theater in Los Angeles, is set to make a comeback after shutting down during the COVID pandemic. Sony Pictures, along with Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, plans to restore and reopen the theater in 2028. Alamo Drafthouse will be responsible for programming and operating it alongside 14 other screens at the adjacent multiplex.
Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group CEO, Tom Rothman, expressed enthusiasm, stating the Dome represents the essence of moviegoing. Michael O’Leary of Cinema United sees this reopening as a symbol of normalcy returning, emphasizing the passion behind the theater.
Historical Significance and Impact
Escott Norton from the Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation shares memories of the immersive experience provided by the dome’s unique geodesic shape, designed for wide-screen films. He highlights its impact when watching movies like ‘Close Encounters’ and ‘Apocalypse Now’ on the curved screen.
Built in 1963 by William Forman, the founder of Pacific Theaters, the Dome was designed to showcase Cinerama—a format meant to rival television’s rise. Constructed in 16 weeks, it premiered the comedy ‘It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World,’ featuring prominent comedy figures and running for two years without interruption.
Cultural and Community Efforts
Throughout the decades, the Dome became a cultural hub, with events like Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ premiere. Tarantino has expressed interest in owning the Dome, recognizing its historical significance.
Preservation activists played crucial roles in reviving the theater. Benjamin Steinberg, an actor and filmmaker, initiated a campaign to save the Dome, organizing rallies and petitions. His bold move projecting images onto the Dome stirred public and owner interest.
“It seemed like it was going to be demolition by neglect,” Steinberg said.
These initiatives created momentum for restoration plans, supported by figures like Norton, who acknowledges Steinberg’s pivotal role in sparking wider interest.
