The Importance of Protecting College Sports

Sports have played a crucial role in shaping my life. My parents met at a track meet at the University of Florida. Growing up, my mother worked as a Division II track coach at the Colorado School of Mines. I often joined her at practice, observing her coaching methods. While I was exposed to many sports, my passion for throwing was unwavering. Experiencing college track events early on revealed the opportunities athletics can provide. Relentless dedication to my craft allowed me to achieve numerous championships and build a nationwide network of friends. Track and field has profoundly impacted who I am today.

Attending Clemson University as a student-athlete has been a transformative experience. Being part of Clemson athletics has opened numerous opportunities. Each day, I am motivated to improve my strength, skills, and knowledge. As a Clemson student-athlete, I benefit from top-notch facilities and a supportive community of coaches and peers. Throughout my college journey, I have pushed my boundaries and grown immensely.

Opportunities and Challenges in College Sports

As an American athlete, my hope is that others get to pursue their dreams through sports. Athletics teach important life skills such as hard work, resilience, adaptability, time management, and relationship building. My coaches encouraged me to pursue a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree rather than taking an easier academic path. They supported my involvement in leadership roles and various organizations. The support from Clemson Athletics has been invaluable to my personal growth and success.

Congress needs to ensure that athletes across the country can pursue their dreams. The legal battles involving the NCAA have created an unstable environment for college sports. Schools like Clemson have invested significantly in providing resources for athletes to succeed. However, disparities are widening between well-funded institutions and mid-major programs, limiting opportunities for high school athletes.

The Impact of Legislative Changes

Legislation such as the Protect College Sports Act is essential to establish a fair playing field for all athletes.

I have seen talented friends cut from teams due to roster constraints and budget cuts. Some universities have eliminated programs entirely. Revenue sharing and NIL changes have had mixed effects on student-athletes. On one hand, revenue-earning sports deserve their share of the value they generate. On the other hand, students face exploitation risks due to lack of regulatory protections.

The transfer portal has also altered the landscape of college sports, making it challenging to maintain team loyalty and culture. Some athletes transfer multiple times, and the traditional allure of college sports is fading. Without sensible regulation, these issues will continue to grow.

Urgency for Congressional Action

Congress must act swiftly to preserve college sports. Protecting current and future athletes is vital for maintaining opportunities that shape lives. S. 4668, the Protect College Sports Act, offers essential legislation for governing revenue sharing, NIL, and eligibility matters, and protecting athletes.

If Congress does not enact necessary measures, the transformative opportunities of college athletics might vanish for future generations. As a student-athlete and member of Clemson’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, I support efforts to secure a sustainable future for college sports, ensuring they remain a source of opportunity and growth.
