Charlie Kirk spoke at Turning Point’s Believers’ Summit on July 26, 2024, in West Palm Beach, Florida. When Jacob York learned that Kirk had been fatally shot, he was at baseball practice. He was deeply affected and decided that day to pursue starting a chapter of Kirk’s organization, Turning Point USA, on his campus.
Jacob York, a student at Olivet Nazarene University, expressed the motivation that many felt following Kirk’s death: “I feel like there were many of us who had that wake-up call.” York submitted several applications to establish a chapter. Kirk’s passing at Utah Valley University was a shock to his followers. Just over a decade before, Kirk founded Turning Point to engage youth in conservative politics. By the time of his death at 31, he had become a significant figure among Gen Z and millennial conservatives.
Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, soon spoke about the resurgence of interest in Turning Point. “If you thought my husband’s mission was powerful before, you have no idea,” she stated, highlighting the momentum that followed his death. She has since taken over as the CEO of Turning Point USA.
Challenges Facing Turning Point
Despite a surge in interest, the organization has faced challenges. Dino Fantegrossi, a former leader of a Turning Point chapter at the University of Arkansas, noted that youth have felt lost since Kirk’s death. “They’re not really sure how to channel their frustrations,” he explained. Fantegrossi has since founded a new group, Young American Revival, focusing on positive change.
Turning Point acknowledged these challenges but reported growth during the 2025-2026 school year. They claimed to have over a million students involved across thousands of high school and college chapters.
The Void Left by Kirk
Charlie Kirk was a key figure for young conservatives and the Republican Party. He played a role in Donald Trump’s success with young voters during the 2024 presidential election. Kirk’s death has left some feeling politically detached. His influence was evident in policy discussions with Trump’s administration during key events, such as the Iranian strikes in 2025.
Kirk faced criticism for controversial statements but remained committed to engaging with different viewpoints at campus events. He was assassinated at Utah Valley University during such an event.
Future of Turning Point USA
The organization is working to continue Kirk’s legacy through events led by Erika Kirk and others. However, these gatherings have had mixed successes. Student organizers have noted tensions within the Republican Party and dissatisfaction with leadership, including Trump.
Hazel Roberts, an organizer at Grand Canyon University, reflected on Kirk’s unifying leadership. She stated, “Charlie was the glue that held us together.”
Misinformation and Perception
Turning Point also faces challenges from conspiracy theories surrounding Kirk’s assassination. Alex BirdSong, a student leader at Georgia State University, spoke about the impact of these claims on the group’s credibility.
Despite passionate beginnings, some students like Max Williams at the University of Richmond find organizing a challenge without Kirk. “I think the interest in conservative organizations is low right now,” he admitted, pointing to dwindling support for the Trump administration.
As students continue to navigate these challenges, the task of maintaining young conservatives’ engagement and enthusiasm remains complex without Charlie Kirk’s leadership.
