Thailand will limit visa-free stays for tourists from several countries, including the United States. This change was announced by the Thai government on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that visitors from 54 countries, such as the US, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and Singapore, can now remain in Thailand for up to 30 days without a visa. Previously, tourists could stay for 60 days.

Since 2024, Thailand had relaxed its visa requirements to boost tourism post-pandemic. In 2025, approximately 33 million tourists visited the country, a reduction from the close to 40 million in 2019, as per the Bank of Thailand.

Although the Thai Embassy in Washington verified the policy change, it did not provide reasons. The Bangkok Post reported concerns about unauthorized businesses and crimes committed by foreigners.

The new regulation will become effective 15 days after publication in The Royal Gazette, the government’s official journal. The specific publication date has not been announced.

Tourists already in Thailand under current visa rules can stay until their visa expires. For travelers from nations not included in the new 30-day arrangement, visa rules vary. Some will continue to have a 15-day exemption, while others can obtain visas upon arrival.

Travelers requiring a visa may apply via the Thai government’s online portal.
