Texas Man Arrested for Alleged Threat Against State Capitol

A Texas man named Benny Caldera Jr. was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly planning an attack on the State Capitol. Caldera, 40, was taken into custody at his home in Converse, Texas. He faces a felony charge for making a terroristic threat against a public servant and is held at Bexar County Jail.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported receiving credible information on Tuesday about a plotted violent attack scheduled for Thursday at the Capitol. The agency collaborated with the FBI and local law enforcement for the investigation.

DPS SWAT arrested Caldera, described as the ‘main suspect,’ around 3 a.m. on Wednesday. FBI Director Kash Patel praised the swift action, stating that law enforcement acted within hours of receiving the tip, taking the main suspect into custody with the assistance of the FBI and local agencies.

Caldera was released on a $75,000 bond. The details of the planned attack and the nature of the credible information remain undisclosed. No additional suspects have been identified publicly.

DPS informed Texas state legislators of the threat and the arrest. The Capitol continues operating during regular hours. To ensure safety, DPS increased its presence at the Capitol to protect employees, officials, and visitors.

In a statement, Texas Governor Greg Abbott asserted that the state would not tolerate threats against the Capitol. He thanked DPS for their effective response.

The investigation is ongoing as officials work to gather more information about the alleged threat.
