Iran’s president and foreign minister faced physical attacks from supporters of a hard-line faction this week. This faction strongly opposes any deal with the United States.

Divisions have emerged within Iran’s leadership, deepening after the United States launched new strikes on Wednesday. President Trump expressed doubt about the countries’ cease-fire, further straining relations.

Iranian officials are divided into two main factions. One faction, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, advocates for negotiations with Washington. However, this group accuses the United States of violating the truce terms. Pezeshkian criticized the U.S., stating Washington was “bullying rivals, creating obstacles and cheating.”

The opposing faction consists of hard-liners who express anger at the Iranian president and the negotiating team. They fiercely oppose any agreement with the U.S.

These tensions are occurring during Iran’s weeklong funeral for its slain supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Ceremonies are taking place in five cities across Iran and Iraq. Khamenei’s body reached Najaf, Iraq, just as American airstrikes began, and is scheduled for burial in Mashhad on Thursday.

Throughout the funeral proceedings, the hard-line faction targeted government officials, highlighting the internal conflict within Iran.
