Taylor Farms has issued a recall for over a dozen items, including salsa and guacamole, due to potential salmonella contamination. These products have been sold at major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Whole Foods, Kroger, and Trader Joe’s.

Taylor Farms, based in California and known for fresh-cut fruits and vegetables, has recently been linked to a cyclospora outbreak involving iceberg lettuce. On Sunday, the company announced a voluntary recall of finished products containing fresh jalapeños, which may be contaminated.

Salmonella bacteria, common in the intestines of humans and animals, are a leading cause of foodborne illnesses in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports these infections can occur when consuming contaminated food or water, posing serious risks to young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.

This recall follows a multistate outbreak of salmonella infections tied to fresh jalapeños supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors. This supplier operates throughout the U.S. and Mexico. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the CDC have identified a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, as a potential source of the outbreak.

The CDC has documented 345 cases of salmonella infection across 27 states since late July, with 36 requiring hospitalization. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported. Taylor Farms has stopped sourcing from the Sinaloa-based grower and is now using alternative suppliers to ensure product safety.

Salmonella Outbreak Overview

According to the FDA, illnesses began between June 19 and July 20. In interviews, 93 percent of the 191 affected individuals reported dining at Mexican-style restaurants, including Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA, during this period.

In response, Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA stopped serving the affected jalapeños once informed of the outbreak. The FDA and CDC have stated there is currently no ongoing salmonella risk at these establishments.

The FDA and CDC are still investigating the outbreak. They urge businesses to check their inventory for potentially contaminated products, including the recalled jalapeños. Coast Citrus Distributors primarily sold these jalapeño-based products to restaurants or wholesale buyers. It is not yet confirmed if grocery stores in the U.S. received them.

Salmonella infections have been recorded in several states, including Alabama, Arkansas, California, and more.
