The Midsummer Classic, intended as a celebration of baseball, turned alarming for the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night. Their star player, Junior Caminero, left the field in pain.
During the third inning against the St. Louis Cardinals, Caminero was struck on the left hand by a 98 mph fastball from closer Riley O’Brien. The incident occurred at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
As soon as Caminero was hit, he darted to the American League dugout, clutching his injured hand before trainers assisted him off the field. Miguel Vargas substituted for him as a pinch-runner.
Despite the scare, follow-up X-rays on Caminero’s hand revealed no fractures.
“Everybody’s worst nightmare in an exhibition is that anything like this happens,” noted Fox play-by-play announcer Joe Davis.
Before the All-Star break, Caminero boasted 28 home runs, tying for fourth in Major League Baseball. His performance has been key to the Rays leading the AL East.
The event, near to being disastrous, ended with relief for the team as Caminero avoided severe injury.
