Talarico Gains Momentum in Texas Senate Race

Competitive Texas Senate Race

The Texas Senate race is drawing significant attention as Democratic State Representative James Talarico gains momentum against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton. Several prediction markets and forecasters now consider the contest competitive, despite Texas’s traditional Republican preference.

Prediction Markets and Forecasts

Kalshi, a prominent prediction market, currently assigns Talarico a 59% chance of victory in November, compared to Paxton’s 41%. Similarly, Polymarket places Talarico at 60% and Paxton at 41%. Market spreads can occasionally sum over 100% due to fluctuations in trading.

Fox News’ latest Power Rankings reflect a shift in the race’s status from “Lean Republican” to “Toss-Up.” The Cook Political Report has also labeled the race a “Toss-Up,” revising its previous “Lean Republican” forecast.

Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin model has transitioned Texas into the “Lean Democrat” category, offering Talarico around a 70% probability of winning the seat, while Paxton holds approximately 30%. Silver cites Texas’s enduring Republican inclination but highlights Talarico’s solid fundraising and Paxton’s scandals as factors tilting in favor of Democrats.

Polling Indicators

Recent polling suggests a competitive race. RealClearPolling, which synthesizes various surveys, places Talarico at 47.6% and Paxton at 45%. Newsweek attempted to contact both campaigns by email for comments outside regular hours and awaits replies.

Social Media Exchanges

The intensifying race sees the candidates exchanging criticisms both on the campaign trail and online. Talarico recently highlighted a spelling error by Paxton in a deleted post, where he confused “Cypress” with “Cyprus,” a Mediterranean island nation. Talarico remarked, “It’s Cypress, not ‘Cyprus.’ But for all the time you spend on luxury vacations in Europe, it’s no surprise you don’t know Texas.”

Potential Historical Shift

If successful, Talarico would be the first Democrat elected to the Texas Senate since 1988. The state has consistently favored Republicans in presidential elections since 1980. Talarico’s campaign prioritizes affordability and economic issues, presenting himself as a faith-driven, pragmatic Democrat.

Challenges Facing Paxton

Paxton, who triumphed over Republican Senator John Cornyn in the May GOP primary runoff, has aligned with former President Donald Trump. However, his record is marked by controversy, including a recent impeachment and acquittal, a resolved securities-fraud case in 2024, allegations of bribery and corruption, and admission of an extramarital affair—all of which he denies.
