A Syrian court in Damascus has sentenced former leader Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia. This decision was made due to his conviction for crimes against humanity and war crimes during Syria’s protracted civil conflict. The court’s ruling represents the first of its kind since the regime’s collapse in December 2024.

Alongside Assad, seven former security officials received the same sentence. These include his brother Maher al-Assad and cousin Atef Najib. All were implicated in actions during the conflict period.

Syrian citizens, bearing photographs of their relatives lost to the civil war, gathered outside the Damascus Palace of Justice. They celebrated the court’s decision as they continued their call for justice and accountability for years of violence.

Since 2024, Assad has been residing in exile in Russia, following his ousting from power. The court’s verdict marks a significant move toward addressing past atrocities committed during war years.
