Stefon Diggs Celebration Costs Washington Commanders in Week 1

In a closely contested Week 1 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders’ wide receiver Stefon Diggs faced consequences for a touchdown celebration. The veteran receiver scored in the fourth quarter but the celebration led to a significant penalty.

After catching a pass from quarterback Jayden Daniels, Diggs went beyond the end zone and jumped onto the goal post. The act drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, costing Washington 15 yards. This penalty moved them out of a reasonable range for a two-point conversion.

Head coach Dan Quinn remarked that the team planned to attempt a two-point conversion if not for the penalty. Instead, they settled for kicking an extra point, narrowing Philadelphia’s lead to one point at 17-16.

The Eagles ultimately secured victory with a 24-22 final score.

Reflecting postgame, Diggs acknowledged, “As soon as I wrapped my arms around it, I was like, ‘Oh, I forgot.’ Back in the day – I’ve been playing for a long time – you used to be able to do that. I’ve got to be better.”

Diggs had a notable debut with Washington, recording four catches for 55 yards and a touchdown.

Washington aims for redemption in their upcoming Week 2 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
