Steak ‘n Shake Eliminates Seed Oils from Buns for Healthier Dining

Steak ‘n Shake has announced a significant change to its menu. Starting now, the fast-food chain’s buns are free from seed oils, a move shared on a post on X. These buns will now feature pure Grade AA Wisconsin butter.

This decision continues Steak ‘n Shake’s efforts to enhance its ingredients. With around 400 locations across the nation, the chain is working to align with the MAHA movement. Earlier, in June, Steak ‘n Shake switched to grass-fed beef and began using 100% beef tallow for frying its chicken tenders, onion rings, and tots.

Michael Boes, the chief MAHA officer of Steak ‘n Shake, emphasized the benefits of using real ingredients. According to Boes, genuine ingredients offer superior taste compared to synthetic additives.

Michael Boes, the chain’s chief MAHA officer, commented, “In my opinion, real ingredients taste better than the synthetic additives.”

The chain’s commitment to removing seed oils from its menu has been clearly highlighted on its website. The page also mentions the availability of cane sugar Coca-Cola and the decision to adopt a2 milk last December.

Responses to this initiative have been quite favorable. U.S. Representative Nancy Mace commented on X, “MAKE AMERICA HEALTHY AGAIN,” while another user wrote, “Thank you for listening to the people! Amazing.” Many social media users have praised Steak ‘n Shake’s recent changes.

Seed oils, typically used in processed foods, are becoming a contentious topic in nutrition discussions. U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has criticized these oils. However, the American Heart Association stated in 2024 that seed oils are not harmful and carry multiple benefits. Conversely, family physician Cate Shanahan advised caution regarding certain seed oils.

Dr. Cate Shanahan recommended avoiding what she termed “the hateful eight seed oils,” which include corn, canola, cottonseed, soy, sunflower, safflower, rice bran, and grapeseed.
