Staten Island Shipyard Explosion: One Dead, Many Injured

An explosion and subsequent fire at a Staten Island shipyard resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to over 30 people, primarily members of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). The incident took place on Friday in the Mariners Harbor area.

Incident Details

The fire ignited around 3:30 p.m. in a basement of a metal structure located at a shipping dock on Richmond Terrace, between Lockman and Andros avenues. FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore confirmed the death of a civilian and injuries sustained by at least 34 FDNY members. A fire marshal was critically injured, and another firefighter was seriously hurt. All victims were transported to nearby hospitals.

The explosion happened while firefighters were conducting search, rescue, and firefighting operations, according to FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito.

Investigation and Response

According to Bonsignore, responders encountered heavy smoke and poor visibility, with reports of two workers trapped in the basement. Esposito highlighted the dangers of confined space operations for rescuers. Injuries occurred among several firefighters conducting searches on and around the barge. The fire escalated quickly to two alarms, with the explosion occurring shortly after emergency arrivals.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani praised first responders for running towards the fire. An area resident described hearing the explosion while driving nearby. The fire was controlled by 7:20 p.m., with more than 200 first responders deployed.

The cause of the fire and explosion remains under investigation. The incident resulted in the death of one civilian while a second endured serious injuries.

Recovery Efforts

Officials reported that the fire marshal experienced head trauma, including a small fracture and brain bleed. He was intubated at the hospital. A firefighter in serious condition showed improvement and was monitored for potential muscle injuries. A doctor from Staten Island University Hospital explained the impact of blast energy in confined spaces and confirmed the firefighters had no penetrating injuries.

Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella urged for community support and praised the services of the fire department and EMS.

Mayor Mamdani visited the injured first responders, expressing gratitude for their bravery and requesting prayers from New Yorkers. Governor Kathy Hochul added her support via a social media post, alongside a pledge from state agencies to assist in the ongoing investigation.

The deceased civilian’s identity has not yet been disclosed.
