Freshman year was a challenging time for Katy Zumerchik. Playing varsity at Stagg, she had to adapt quickly from her regular position as a middle hitter to the outside. The transition required some adjustment. To add to this, she experienced a growth spurt that caused knee pain, identified as Osgood-Schlatter syndrome.
Zumerchik said, “I got down on myself and wasn’t able to play to my full potential. But I worked through it.”
Now, things have improved significantly. Zumerchik, standing 5-foot-10 as a junior outside hitter, made a significant impact during Wednesday night’s nonconference win over Tinley Park. She contributed 13 kills and scored two aces in the team’s 25-12, 25-15 victory.
Her teammate Nicole Maka moved from outside to middle due to Amelia Kadamus’s injury. Maka added four kills, while Hannah Svoboda provided 13 assists, helping Stagg secure a 2-0 start to the season. Kadamus, a recruit for Purdue Northwest, is hopeful to recover from an ankle injury soon.
Coach Erin Moran expressed optimism about Kadamus’s return, saying, “We’re hoping Amelia can be back in a few days.” With upcoming games in the Chicago Christian Invitational, the team looks forward to strong performances.
On the opposing team, Sarah Aggen led Tinley Park with five kills and Grace Samborski served two aces.
Zumerchik’s love for volleyball began at Palos South Middle School. She tried various activities, including basketball, cross country, and soccer, but ultimately chose volleyball as her main focus. Her dedication paid off with 23 kills in victories against Oak Lawn and Tinley Park.
Nicole Maka said, “Whenever the ball goes to her, I know we’re going to get the point. She always puts the ball down.”
Coach Peggy Clemens saw potential in Zumerchik early, commenting on her ability to adjust from middle to outside hitter with patience and skill.
Last season, Stagg finished with a 17-16 record, the team’s first winning season since 2017. Zumerchik has high ambitions for the current season, aiming to extend this success further.
Zumerchik shared, “I’m excited. I think we have a lot of potential. We still have a lot to work on, but if we work together, we can go far.”
Head coach Erin Moran, embracing her new role at Stagg, commented on the team’s strong chemistry. She brings a wealth of experience, having previously coached Sandburg boys to the Elite Eight in 2025.
Zumerchik looks forward to leading her team, not just through her own performance but by encouraging her teammates to excel together. Her passion reflects a strong belief in teamwork and winning mindset.
