The San Antonio Spurs have extended the NBA Western Conference finals to a decisive Game 7 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. On Thursday, May 28, San Antonio delivered a commanding performance at home, winning 118-91 in Game 6.
The Thunder previously swept their first two playoff series, only to face challenges with the Spurs, a team they struggled against during the regular season. San Antonio dominated four out of five face-offs with Oklahoma City, including a 117-102 victory on Christmas Day.
Victor Wembanyama was pivotal for the Spurs, achieving a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds in Game 6. Playing 28 minutes, he shot 10-for-21 from the field and hit 4-for-9 from beyond the arc. “We played together and passed the ball,” Wembanyama stated. “We trusted the game plan as always.”
The Spurs exhibited their strength in the third quarter by outscoring the Thunder 32-13, including a 20-0 scoring streak. Wembanyama emphasized the need for consistent defense, acknowledging that outscoring a team 20-0 is rare, yet stressing the importance of consistency. He significantly contributed to the defense with three of the team’s seven blocks.
Meanwhile, Stephon Castle effectively defended against Thunder’s star, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the two-time reigning MVP. Gilgeous-Alexander struggled to find his rhythm, managing only 15 points after a disappointing performance of 6-for-18 shooting and failing to score from three-point range across 28 minutes. He maintained a perfect record from the free-throw line, going 3-for-3. Despite feeling confident in his shots, Gilgeous-Alexander acknowledged it’s late in the season to alter his shooting technique.
Although Oklahoma City will have the advantage of playing on their home court, Gilgeous-Alexander understands that overcoming the Spurs requires more than location. “We are a motivated group and accept the challenge ahead,” he said. “Anything can happen in a Game 7. It’s win or go home. Playing in your building is nice but it doesn’t really mean anything. You have to be the better basketball team.”
The Thunder will host Game 7 against the Spurs at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City on Saturday, May 30, at 8 p.m. ET. The game will air on NBC and stream on Peacock.
