South Elgin’s Jonathan Niksich Shines in Pitching Duel

Junior pitcher Jonathan Niksich from South Elgin faced challenges early in the season. Reflecting on his performance, he realized a key change was needed. “I decided to stop thinking and just play the game,” he stated.

This new approach proved valuable for Niksich as he stepped up during a crucial game against rival Bartlett. With the Upstate Eight Conference title at stake, the intense match ended in a stalemate after 14 innings due to darkness.

Starting pitcher Zacharia Barkho dominated for eight innings until he reached his pitch limit. Niksich took over, delivering an impressive six innings in relief. He struck out 11 batters, gave up only two hits, and walked two. Barkho also shone, striking out 13 while allowing two hits and a walk. Alex Muro contributed by securing two hits.

The tense game saw Bartlett’s pitchers—Brandon Pelz, Aiden Mertes, and Joe Kennedy—combine to deliver 14 shutout innings. They struck out 12, scattered five hits, and walked three. Josh Colaizzi and Mason Leiterman both hit singles and doubles, while only Barkho reached third base.

Niksich noted how Barkho’s energy during his last high school game fueled his own performance. “I knew I was going to have his back and perform the same way,” Niksich said.

South Elgin coach David Palmer praised Niksich’s resilience. “Johnny was unbelievable,” Palmer remarked. “He wants that ball and thrives in the moment. Watching him maintain that adrenaline is something special.”

Barkho expressed his enthusiasm for playing against Bartlett, sharing, “It was awesome. I enjoyed the challenge, smiling with determination.”

In the pitching battle, Pelz matched Barkho’s effort over six innings. Bartlett coach Alex Coan emphasized Pelz’s reliability, saying, “We trust him in big moments, and today’s game was exactly what we expected—a dogfight.”

Palmer, from the opposing dugout, shared his perspective, stating, “In the fourth inning, we realized getting Zach one run would be enough given the conditions and their pitching.”

Niksich remained composed when called upon. “I was ready for this moment,” he affirmed. Coach Palmer appreciated Niksich’s progression through the season, noting his quick, confident work on the mound.

Niksich’s performance exemplified his development, showcasing his readiness for the challenges ahead in future games.
