The son of Eric Bieniemy, an assistant coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, has been arrested over the shooting of his mother, Mia Bieniemy. Virginia authorities announced the arrest. The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to a shooting in Ashburn, Virginia late Sunday. Mia Bieniemy, 57, was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds and taken to a hospital. She is currently in stable condition.

Elijah Zion Bieniemy, aged 27, faces charges including malicious wounding, use of a firearm during a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a residence. He remains held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.

Eric Bieniemy, the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, attended a team practice in St. Joseph, Missouri, earlier that Sunday. He did not attend the Monday practice. Kansas City Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid expressed support for Bieniemy and his family, emphasizing the strength of their support network.

Eric Bieniemy’s coaching career includes serving as Kansas City’s offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022, during which the team topped the NFL at 30.1 points per game. He recently spent the 2025 season as the Chicago Bears’ running backs coach and held positions with the UCLA Bruins and the Washington Commanders in prior years. His recent return to the Chiefs followed Bill Nagy’s departure to join the New York Giants under John Harbaugh.
