ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — News surfaced regarding the arrest of Elijah Zion Bieniemy, son of Chiefs assistant coach Eric Bieniemy. He faces charges related to the shooting of his mother, Mia Bieniemy, in Virginia.

The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office reported responding to a shooting in Ashburn, Virginia, late Sunday. The couple kept a residence there during Eric Bieniemy’s tenure with the Washington Commanders. Deputies discovered 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy with multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to the hospital and remains stable.

Elijah Bieniemy, age 27, was apprehended early Monday. Charged with malicious wounding, firearm use in felony commission, and unlawful firearm discharge inside a dwelling, he is detained without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. Authorities continue their investigation.

Eric Bieniemy was in St. Joseph, Missouri, at the Chiefs’ training camp the previous day. He missed the Monday workout, which was closed to public view. The team halted media interactions thereafter. The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family, remarked the Chiefs to The Associated Press. Respecting their privacy, comments are withheld. They expressed consideration for the Bieniemy family.

Eric Bieniemy joined Chief’s coach Andy Reid’s staff in Kansas City in 2013. Initially serving as the running backs coach for five years, he transitioned to offensive coordinator. His tenure propelled the Chiefs to three Super Bowls, securing victories in two, whilst crafting a leading NFL offense.

Despite interviewing for head-coaching positions, he consistently faced rejection. In an effort to enhance his resume, Bieniemy engaged with the Commanders in 2023. Unfortunately, the team’s performance faltered, resulting in coach Ron Rivera’s staff dismissal. Following a stint as UCLA’s offensive coordinator, he served the Bears as running backs coach last season.

Eric Bieniemy rejoined the Chiefs this season, succeeding Matt Nagy as offensive coordinator. Present during the Kansas City offseason activities, he participated as training camp commenced last week. The Chiefs have Tuesday off, with a full-squad workout scheduled at Missouri Western State University on Wednesday.

Chief’s coach, Andy Reid, acknowledged Bieniemy’s return last week saying, It’s great to have (Bieniemy) back in the building. Reid commended Bieniemy’s energy and leadership, emphasizing his diligence and effectiveness in the role.
