Darializa Avila Chevalier, a community organizer and Columbia University alumna, has secured a victory against a long-term Democratic incumbent in New York’s 13th Congressional District. Backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, this controversial socialist has drawn attention for her far-left positions and past statements.
Avila Chevalier, known for her outspoken views, once described the United States as “a f—–g disgrace.” Her actions and statements during her time at Columbia included involvement with Columbia University Apartheid Divest, a group that posted “Death to America” on social media. Recently, she defeated five-term Representative Adriano Espaillat in the Democratic primary.
She has been scrutinized for her stance against private property, police, borders, and for supporting the nationalization of large parts of the private sector. In 2021, she reiterated her belief in abolishing borders, prisons, and police, calling it “possible, necessary, and the only moral way forward.” Avila Chevalier also criticized deportations, labeling all as wrong.
Despite making controversial statements against notable figures such as former President Joe Biden, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Vice President Kamala Harris, Avila Chevalier gained traction among left-leaning voters. Mayor Mamdani’s support played a crucial role in her nomination. He defended her campaign, asserting that her views have evolved over time.
Avila Chevalier’s success is notable in a district that has never been represented by a Republican. Her district includes Upper Manhattan and parts of the West Bronx. With her Democratic nomination secured, she is poised to win in the upcoming general election.
