Smartphone Thefts in London: A Persistent Issue

In recent years, tens of thousands of smartphones have been stolen in London. For some, the theft is only the beginning of their troubles.

Take the case of Alex Pikula. While visiting London in May 2024, his phone was stolen by an e-bike rider as he left a theater in the West End. Initially, he felt frustrated but believed the incident had ended there. However, he soon realized it was just the start of a more troubling situation.

His mother began to receive alarming texts. The messages claimed access to her son’s emails and bank details. They escalated to include a video showing a gun and threats of sexual assault and murder. One ominous text read: “I know who you are and where you live. I’ve killed for far less than a phone before. We will see if you value your life over this phone.” All the messages demanded one action: unlink her son’s Apple ID from his stolen phone.

A Widespread Issue

Retrieved phones are rare. In 2024, a record 81,000 phones were reported stolen in London. While the number dropped to about 71,000 last year, thefts remain a significant problem, causing concern among residents and tourists alike.

The Metropolitan Police have increased their focus on international networks involved in shipping stolen phones abroad, particularly to China, where they end up on the black market.
