Six Flags Great America announced its largest investment in decades, introducing a new roller coaster and a themed area named Camp Timber Trail, set to open in 2027. This marks the park’s most significant expansion since the Southwest Territory debuted in 1996. As the park commemorates its 50th anniversary, Park President John Krajnak highlighted the importance of this investment.

“It’s really special,” Krajnak noted, underscoring the investment’s substantial nature and expansive scope. Camp Timber Trail will serve as an immersive family-oriented adventure destination, featuring interactive play and outdoor discoveries, according to a park news release.

The centerpiece will be the Sky Hawk coaster, billed as the Midwest’s longest, tallest, and fastest suspended family coaster, offering breathtaking views of the natural landscape. Additional attractions include Trail Trotters, an animal-themed trek promoting guest exploration, and Forest Grove Play Park with nature-inspired play features.

Four classic Yukon Territory rides will receive updates. Sprocket Rockets will transform into Chirp Chaser, Crazy Bus into Wilderness Wagon, Yahoo River into Creek Cruiser, and Buzzy Beez will reemerge as Bee Boppin’. Established attractions like Little Dipper and Logger’s Run will also integrate with the new thematic area.

The new area promises themed dining, specialty treats, exclusive merchandise, and environmental storytelling, though it’s undecided whether this represents a rebranding of Yukon Territory or a new addition.

The investment comes two years after Six Flags merged with Cedar Fair Entertainment Co., a move that revitalized the company. A theme park consultant noted the merger saved struggling Six Flags parks.

This project is part of a broader strategy to enhance guest experiences, improve park environments, and offer new attractions annually. Beyond Camp Timber Trail, efforts will focus on enhancing landscapes, walkways, guest services, and the park’s overall ambiance.

Krajnak stated this venture is the “first step in a multi-year transformation,” promising a vibrant future for the park. Looking forward, guests can expect continuing property-wide improvements as the park embarks on a transformative journey over the next three to five years, signaling a new chapter in its history.
