Confirmed Tornado Activity

The National Weather Service confirmed that tornadoes struck the south suburbs on Monday. An EF-1 tornado passed through Hazel Crest, Homewood, Country Club Hills, and Harvey, while an EF-0 tornado touched Orland Park. These added to a previously confirmed EF-1 tornado in Lansing, bringing the total to three.

The tornado in Hazel Crest caused extensive damage. Power outages were widespread by Wednesday morning. Authorities advised residents to avoid downed power lines.

Impact on Local Communities

Homewood’s Mayor, Rich Hofeld, described significant disruptions. Many intersections lost traffic signals, and several areas remained without power. Emergency services operated on generators, and some senior facilities were still without electricity.

The American Red Cross opened a shelter in Steger, accommodating those displaced by the storm. Fay Kiaurakis, the center’s director, reported high shelter usage with many seeking food and charging facilities. Community donations provided essential supplies.

The shelter remains operational with efforts ongoing to find housing for displaced residents. Kiaurakis highlighted the importance of making children comfortable during this time.

Orland Park reported power restoration progress. Mayor Jim Dodge expressed relief about the absence of severe injuries or structural damage. Though no funnel clouds were reported, the National Weather Service confirmed tornado activity based on damage assessments.
