An intense tornado struck eastern Wisconsin on Monday afternoon causing severe damage and widespread power outages, affecting thousands of residents. The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado’s presence near Appleton, Menasha, and Lake Winnebago, approximately 30 miles southwest of Green Bay around 12:15 p.m.

Several locations experienced the tornado’s impact, including Neenah, Sherwood, Harrison, Stockbridge, Quinney, Kloten, Brant, Brothertown, Jericho, and Charlesburg. Images and videos from Menasha show twisted metal and wooden debris scattered across highways, with significant damage visible at a warehouse.

Witness Greg Van Driest, working in downtown Appleton, described the sky as abnormally dark, resembling nighttime conditions. “The word we all were using was ‘ominous,'” he said, noting the unusual darkness.

Winnebago County’s top official, Gordon Hintz, reported no fatalities or injuries at the time, though emergency searches continued. “The footage looks devastating,” he said, citing numerous reports of destroyed buildings and overturned vehicles. Hintz confirmed that storm warnings were issued in advance.

National Weather Service meteorologist Holley Kamba noted extensive damage reports in southern Outagamie County and eastern Winnebago County, mentioning downed trees and power lines. As of now, no injuries are reported.

The Appleton Police Department shared a photo of fallen trees and disrupted power lines on Facebook and detailed ongoing storm-related calls. Images online highlight the damage in Appleton with roofless homes, overturned cars, and debris-covered streets.

Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson expressed concerns over the lack of confirmation on fatalities or injuries. He highlighted severe damage in Menasha and Fox Crossing, including collapsed buildings. “All indications are that this was a devastating system,” he said, advising people to remain indoors and check on loved ones.

In Menasha, approximately 18,000 residents are without power due to a damaged transmission line. Authorities opened a shelter at a local church for those seeking safety as the city remains vulnerable.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers communicated via social media, assuring state support and thanking emergency responders for their efforts. “As storms continue, stay alert and stay safe, Wisconsin,” he advised.

The National Weather Service predicted ongoing strong winds, hail, and possible short-lived tornados.
