A man on vacation experienced a birthday nightmare when his celebratory night turned into a desperate struggle for life due to a severe allergic reaction. This incident highlights the importance of vigilance for those with allergies. As documented in a 2021 review in the journal Allergy, about 1-2% of people in Western countries have a peanut allergy, like Ellis Edwards. Symptoms can vary from mild reactions such as hives or nausea to severe cases causing anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening without immediate intervention.
Dining Out Risks
Edwards, who suffers from a life-threatening peanut allergy, has always carefully managed his condition. He emphasized that he consistently informs restaurant staff about his allergy before ordering meals. Yet, during a dinner at an unnamed restaurant in Valletta, Malta, things went awry.
Edwards recounted his experience to Newsweek, explaining he made it clear at the restaurant that he could not consume peanuts. The staff suggested an Oreo dessert, assuring him it contained only hazelnuts within the Nutella and was safe for him.
After consuming a few spoonfuls, Edwards started feeling tingling in his lips and swelling around his mouth, along with mild difficulty in breathing. Concerned, he asked a fellow diner to taste the dessert, who remarked it seemed to taste like peanuts.
Escalation of Symptoms
Edwards and his companions raised the issue with the restaurant staff, who insisted the dessert did not contain peanuts. Trusting their assertion, they settled the bill and departed.
Initially, Edwards thought his symptoms were manageable due to the mild onset. However, fifteen minutes later, his condition deteriorated rapidly. He experienced increasing difficulty in breathing, facial swelling, and burning eyes, signaling a full anaphylactic reaction.
“My breathing became increasingly difficult, my face started swelling, my eyes were burning and itching, and I realized I was having a full anaphylactic reaction,” Edwards described.
At 12:50 a.m., Edwards self-administered epinephrine using an EpiPen but found no relief. Ten minutes later, he used a second EpiPen as the situation worsened and an ambulance was summoned.
The wait for medical help was harrowing for Edwards. Doubts about survival loomed as minutes stretched unbearably amid dwindling treatment options.
Upon ambulance arrival, paramedics provided additional epinephrine, oxygen, and a nebulizer before transporting him to the hospital, where he was monitored until May 2.
A Lasting Impact
Edwards’ recovery was paired with an emotional and psychological toll. Despite having travel insurance cover his medical expenses, the experience has eroded his confidence in allergen information provided by restaurants.
“I have become much more anxious about eating out and have lost a great deal of trust in allergen information provided by restaurants,” Edwards noted.
He later shared a video on TikTok under the username @_ellisedwards, highlighting how an evening of celebration abruptly turned into a fight for survival.
Edwards hopes his ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences a food allergy mishap can entail. “Life can change in the blink of an eye,” he warns through social media.
