Democratic Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona has expressed concerns about the conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. He is pushing for an investigation following a report from the grandmother of a sailor stationed on the carrier. The grandmother reported that her grandson has experienced significant weight loss during the ship’s prolonged deployment.
Sen. Kelly, who has a background as a Navy combat pilot and currently serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, shared these details in an interview with Morning Edition. He mentioned that the concerned grandmother described her grandson as initially thin upon entering the Navy and noted that he appears to have lost between 20 to 25 pounds.
“He’s struggling,” Kelly recounted, referring to his discussion with the sailor’s grandmother. “It’s depressing, and it’s a very difficult situation.”
Furthermore, Sen. Kelly criticized the responses from President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, characterizing them as dismissive of the alleged issues aboard the USS Lincoln. He emphasized that both he and other lawmakers are advocating for an investigation. Kelly also supports the idea of a bipartisan congressional delegation visiting the carrier to evaluate the situation firsthand.
