Senator John Fetterman, representing Pennsylvania as a Democrat, appeared via video message at the Republican National Midterm Convention held at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. This unexpected appearance took place on a Wednesday evening.

In the 64-second video, Fetterman introduced his friend and fellow Pennsylvania senator, Republican Dave McCormick. Fetterman expressed admiration for McCormick, calling him “the kind of senator that gets the job done” and stated he was “proud to count him as my friend.” Although there were rumors that Fetterman might praise President Trump, the video did not include such comments.

Filmed in front of an industrial site in Pennsylvania, Fetterman wore his characteristic black hoodie. He emphasized the importance of preserving steel jobs, pointing to the iconic U.S. Steel mill. “That’s the iconic U.S. Steel mill and that’s exactly the kind of thing that we’ll work on together,” he stated. He mentioned collaborating with President Trump to support the steel industry in the Steel Valley. This comment represented the closest he came to praising Trump.

Throughout the video, Fetterman reiterated his identity as a Democrat. “Yes, I’m a Democrat. Why am I here talking to you today? Because, well, I’m a common sense Democrat,” he stated. Fetterman emphasized his commitment to America, rejecting extremes, socialism, and what he described as an “anti-American way of life.”

Fetterman has experienced growing estrangement from his party. A Wall Street Journal article earlier detailed his limited engagement with Senate duties, focusing instead on connections with conservative media and support for Israel. The report was based on interviews with past staff and legislators. In response, Fetterman countered, “Per usual — lies, half-truths, innuendos, smears and anonymous.” He stated his dedication to serving Pennsylvania despite negative portrayals.

Fetterman clarified he would leave the Democratic Party only if it adopted an anti-Israel stance. He argued that leaked text messages mentioned in reports lacked context. Elected in 2022, his campaign was marked by a stroke, followed by a public struggle with depression after taking office.

A recent poll from the New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, and Sienna University revealed that Fetterman holds higher favorability among Pennsylvania Republicans compared to McCormick. Conversely, he received only 22% favorability from Democrats in his home state.
