Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey has voiced his opposition to the SAVE America Act, a legislative push by President Donald Trump. This stance comes in light of an incident where approximately 6,600 noncitizens were mistakenly made eligible to vote in New Jersey. Booker argues that this error does not justify the passing of the federal voter ID law.

“Nothing in the SAVE Act would have prevented a clerical error like we’ve seen in Texas, Oregon, and New Jersey,” Booker stated. “We’ve got to protect our voting systems.”

The issue was brought to light by New Jersey Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill, who revealed that these noncitizens were erroneously added to the voter roll due to a “serious software error” in the Motor Vehicle System. The error could have allowed them to vote in the 2024 presidential election.

The revelation comes as Trump urges Senate Republicans to support the SAVE Act. However, the act faces opposition from Democrats and lack of complete backing from GOP members. Booker criticizes the SAVE Act, claiming it would disenfranchise millions of Americans, describing it as a “massive voter suppression bill.”

Following the discovery, Gov. Sherrill initiated an investigation and ordered the correction of the voter rolls. New Jersey officials are taking steps to resolve the situation and hold those accountable for the error. Booker emphasized, “We take this very seriously in New Jersey. People are stepping up.”

In contrast to his stance on the SAVE Act, Booker agrees on the necessity of proof of citizenship for voting but insists it should be managed at the state level, even in federal elections. He maintains that issues and legal violations should be prosecuted by the states, adhering to the Constitution.

The absence of a national standard for detecting or reporting voting errors complicates the assessment of their prevalence. Proponents of the SAVE Act argue that it would help identify and address such issues.

Booker expressed concern over the use of the New Jersey incident to push agendas he believes detrimental to Americans. “We’re going to handle the problems in New Jersey, but I hate how it’s being weaponized to advance schemes that actually would hurt Americans,” he commented regarding the SAVE Act.
