Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance announced the birth of their fourth child, Alec Neel Vance. The name Alec, while classic, has become less common. The couple shared the news on Sunday via Instagram and X @jdvance.

“We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning,” Vance stated. “Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother.”

The Vances expressed gratitude to military doctors and staff at the Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit. The White House’s X page congratulated them on the birth of their child.

Alec’s birth marks a rare moment in U.S. politics, as he is the first child born to a sitting vice president in over 150 years. The last was Schuyler Colfax’s son, born in 1870. This announcement comes six months after the Vances revealed they were expecting another son. Alec joins siblings Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4.

Usha Vance, at 40, is part of the fastest-growing group of mothers in the U.S., where births among women aged 40 and older are rising, although overall birth rates decline.

The name Alec, once popular, has seen a decline. According to SSA data, its popularity peaked in 1994, ranking 109th, but dropped to 977th by 2025. In 1900, Alec was 650th, dropping to 939th in 1927, before another available rank in 1947 at 912th. The name climbed from 1979, peaking in 1994, and saw a small rise from 467th in 2014 to 456th in 2015, but continues to fall.

This trend contrasts with current popular names like Liam, Noah, Oliver, Theodore, and Henry for boys, and Olivia, Charlotte, Emma, Amelia, and Sophia for girls. A 2025 Nameberry survey revealed parents increasingly avoid top 10 names, choosing more distinctive ones. The Vances chose uncommon names for their children, reflecting this trend as Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel’s names are outside the current top 1,000.
