Lane Kiffin faces a challenge as LSU recruits former Ole Miss players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, both released by NFL teams. These players gained eligibility through a court’s temporary restraining order, allowing NFL rookies to return for a fifth college year. However, a possible SEC adoption of a Big Ten rule may prevent former NFL players from SEC participation.
Should Kiffin defy this anticipated rule, LSU could face severe penalties from the SEC. According to Pete Nakos from On3, an SEC athletic director stated, “If LSU plays either player, the Tigers should be disqualified from the SEC season and/or face a $1 million fine.” The SEC underscores its stance: college sports are meant for college athletes, not former professionals.
The league expressed concerns about blurring lines between college and professional sports and the impact on competitive equity and opportunities for other athletes. It stressed the importance of the Protect College Sports Act due to national eligibility confusion.
Kiffin’s response suggests frustration over conferences barring returning players. On the “Pat McAfee Show,” he questioned potential SEC actions that might counter legal rulings allowing these players to participate. Kiffin argued, “You can’t choose which court orders to follow based on preference.” His concerns highlight complexities in balancing court orders and conference regulations.
