Search Continues for Missing Climbers After Avalanche in Pakistan

The remains of American mountain climber Sarah Mallory Geis were discovered on Friday following an avalanche in Pakistan’s Karakoram mountain range. Geis, along with an international group, went missing while climbing Broad Peak, the twelfth tallest mountain globally at 26,414 feet.

Pakistani officials also located the bodies of Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy of Oman and Pur Bahadur Gurung of Nepal. Rescue teams, equipped with drones, detected signs of additional bodies in the search area. The terrain is remote and challenging, complicating rescue operations.

Rescue efforts were temporarily suspended due to weather conditions but are set to resume. Irfan Arshad, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, expressed commitment to recovering both survivors and deceased. He highlighted that renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja is among the missing.

Sajid Hussain from the tourism department emphasized the difficulty of the operation due to rugged terrain and severe weather. High-altitude porters and rescue teams are involved, cautiously working to bring the bodies to the base camp.
