Sean Penn to Direct Film on Jan. 6 Capitol Riot Officer

Warner Bros. revealed that Sean Penn will direct an upcoming film about a police officer involved in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. Known for his Oscar-winning role in “One Battle After Another,” Penn will helm the project based on his own script. Bradley Cooper is in discussions to star in the film, though no agreement has been reached yet.

While Warner Bros. and Penn’s representatives refrained from commenting, the character is reportedly inspired by a real-life figure. Penn’s connection to the events dates back to when he attended the 2022 hearings of the House Select Committee. He was seated alongside Metropolitan Police officers Michael Fanone and Daniel Hodges, both of whom were active during the riot.

Officer Fanone offered testimony about his experience, where he was subjected to violence and faced a heart attack amid the chaos. His ordeal only ceased when he mentioned having children. Officer Hodges also shared his challenging experiences during the hearings. Penn was present as an ordinary citizen to observe the proceedings.

The film is anticipated to explore “an unexpected friendship.” Production is slated to begin in the middle of 2027.

This announcement follows the U.S. Justice Department’s decision not to oppose Paramount Skydance’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The deal, valued at $111 billion, was finalized in February. It will place Warner Bros. under the leadership of Paramount CEO David Ellison, who has links to President Donald Trump. Recently, Ellison attended a UFC event held at the White House.

Previously, Penn won his third Oscar for his portrayal of Col. Steven J. Lockjaw, a contentious character in “One Battle After Another.” Despite the film winning best picture at the Academy Awards in March, Penn chose to visit Ukraine instead of attending the ceremony.
