Darializa Avila Chevalier, a socialist candidate in New York, is drawing criticism for previous social media activity. She had posted content supportive of communism and Marxist ideas on a now-deleted Twitter account.
Avila Chevalier, endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), managed the Twitter account until June 2022. Posts from the account praised Karl Marx, lamented the lack of Marxist literature in libraries, and quoted Assata Shakur, a convicted cop killer.
One tweet retweeted by Avila Chevalier mocked the shortcomings of capitalism, stating people reject communism due to trivial concerns like the availability of soup varieties.
The candidate has previously faced backlash for deleted posts advocating the police’s abolition and using the American flag disrespectfully. These revelations have led to criticism from conservatives and moderates alike, both online and via television.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani continues to support Avila Chevalier despite these resurfaced posts. Senator John Fetterman has criticized the Democratic Party’s shift leftward and questioned if Democrats will continue their support.
Critics like UPenn student Eyal Yakoby and CNN commentator Scott Jennings have pointed out contradictions in the perceived difference between socialism and communism, with Yakoby questioning how radical policies align with mainstream Democratic values.
Attacks have also come from public figures like Spencer Pratt, who compared Democratic Socialists to historical political movements. Republican Senator Tim Sheehy criticized socialism and communism for their historical impacts, posting about the threat of these ideologies.
Despite the criticisms, Avila Chevalier won against incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat in New York’s 13th Congressional District primary. She is predicted to prevail in the general election in the predominantly Democratic region.
