Sally Yates, formerly the U.S. Deputy Attorney General and a seasoned federal prosecutor, has been appointed to lead an independent investigation into Cornell University’s handling of rape allegations by a former student. Yates’ selection was announced as the university faces criticism both on campus and nationwide.

The controversy arises from a civil lawsuit filed by a former student, referred to as Jane Doe, who alleges she was drugged and gang raped in 2024. Doe claims the university failed in its response to her complaint and highlights deficiencies in its aftermath.

An independent review led by Yates will focus on the university’s policies related to preventing and responding to sexual harassment, sexual assault, and related misconduct on campus. Yates, now a partner at King & Spalding, was chosen by the Special Committee of the Cornell University Board of Trustees.

“Sally Yates brings extraordinary experience, independence, and judgment to this work,” said Anne Meinig Smalling, chair of the special committee. “The questions raised by the Jane Doe matter warrant a rigorous examination of Cornell’s response to that case. Our responsibility extends further, encompassing a review of Cornell’s overall approach to these issues and identifying necessary improvements.”

The lawsuit, initiated in mid-September, claims that seven men drugged and assaulted Doe in October 2024 at a campus fraternity house. Though no criminal charges have been filed, those implicated deny any wrongdoing. Jane Doe’s lawsuit also names Cornell University as a defendant.

According to the university, campus police conducted a thorough investigation, and the Title IX findings resulted in suspensions and expulsions. However, the university’s response has led to student protests.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul responded to the situation by appointing State Attorney General Letitia James to oversee a criminal investigation due to criticism of the case’s handling by campus police and local prosecutor Matthew Van Houten. The situation has reignited national discussions concerning consent and sexual assault on university campuses.
