Royal Fury Over New Allegations in Charles Spencer’s Book

King Charles III and Prince William are reportedly upset by Charles Spencer’s new book, which accuses the monarch and reopens old wounds within the royal family. “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister” was published, with experts commenting on the claims for Fox News Digital.

Spencer wrote about disagreements with then-Prince Charles over plans for William and Prince Harry to walk behind Princess Diana’s coffin in her 1997 funeral procession. Most notably, Spencer claims that Charles was “giddily elated” after Diana’s death and allegedly said, “We’ll forget her soon enough.”

King Charles replied to Spencer’s claims, asserting, “Gaslighting.”

Royal expert Kinsey Schofield explained to Fox News Digital that there is frustration and anger over these revelations. For the king, there’s anger over accusations targeting his character long after Diana’s death. Charles has faced being depicted as the villain in the Diana narrative for years.

Schofield went on to describe Prince William’s sense of betrayal, given that Spencer promised at Diana’s funeral to protect William and Harry. Now, William watches his uncle reopen traumatic childhood events and hear damaging allegations against his father.

William is not only Charles’ son but also the future king, and the monarchy Spencer targets is the institution William will inherit. Spencer’s decision to revisit disputed private memories from decades ago raises questions about how it serves William and Harry.

Following book excerpts published last week, Buckingham Palace issued a strong statement regarding fraternal grief clouding reason, affecting judgment, and coloring memory.

The palace told Fox News Digital they had no comment but confirmed they do not respond to books. Spencer stands by his account, stating to BBC that he is telling the truth and questioning if Charles is “furious or embarrassed.”

Christopher Andersen, author of “The Day Diana Died,” told Fox News Digital about his surprise with Spencer’s allegations. Andersen described Charles as devastated and emotional upon news of Diana’s death.

Andersen’s sources recounted how Charles dealt with the loss, as Queen Elizabeth initially refused Diana a public funeral, leaving Charles to convince her to honor Diana. Despite reports of Charles having been emotional, Andersen wouldn’t be surprised if Charles lashed out at Spencer in anger.

Spencer’s memoir “Swan Song” continues to spark discussion, with different accounts of events challenging his statements. British experts report that William is “absolutely furious” but maintains public silence, focusing on royal duties.

Helena Chard commented that Buckingham Palace remains calm amidst this conflict, with members focused on maintaining their responsibilities and duties.
