Republican Legal Action
The Republican National Committee (RNC) combined with state GOP leaders filed a lawsuit against New Jersey’s election officials and authorities in five counties. They allege a failure to provide federally mandated voter roll maintenance records. The goal is to ensure transparency for the voters.
“The RNC exposed noncitizens on New Jersey’s voter rolls,” RNC Chairman Joe Gruters stated. “Now, election officials are hiding the records that would tell voters how it happened. The RNC won’t stand for it.”
Ongoing Legal Battle
Although some documents were provided, the lawsuit claims that New Jersey’s chief election official, along with county authorities in Bergen, Hudson, Middlesex, Somerset, and Union counties, continue to withhold crucial records required by federal law.
The lawsuit is part of the RNC’s broader strategy to protect the integrity of elections nationwide. This includes checking whether ineligible voters were removed after registrations occurred. Pressure is also mounting in Washington, where congressional investigators seek answers about similar voter registration issues.
Initial Discovery and Reaction
The legal challenge follows revelations of hundreds of noncitizens on New Jersey’s voter registries, as reported by Fox News Digital in June. Migrants seeking naturalization self-attested to being noncitizens; some were found to have voted in past elections. Additional investigations revealed discrepancies through instances like jury duty evasion, where registered voters claimed non-citizenship.
Political Responses
Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill acknowledged illegal voter registrations. Despite this, Republicans criticize state Democrats for avoiding accountability and failing to address how noncitizens were added to the voter rolls. The RNC highlights the necessity for transparency and safeguards for voter information.
Nationwide Campaign
The RNC’s lawsuit aligns with a nationwide campaign to ensure election integrity ahead of midterm elections. Their multimillion-dollar election integrity unit has reached out to 48 states requesting voter roll maintenance records. This aims to improve transparency and protect election procedures wherever necessary.
Ongoing Proceedings
Other plaintiffs in the lawsuit include Rep. Tom Kean Jr., R-N.J., and New Jersey Senate Republican Leader Anthony Bucco. Kean Jr. emphasized the need for full transparency and accountability of over 6,600 noncitizen registrations. Election officials must release the records so voters are informed about the state of their elections.
