Trump Endorsement Causes Stir Among Senate Republicans in Texas Race

Moments after President Donald Trump announced his support in the Texas Senate race, Senate Republicans experienced a noticeable shift in mood. Many were on their way to their weekly meeting, where they planned to discuss the stalled immigration funding package. Trump’s endorsement of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over the long-serving Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, left many speechless. Some senators worry this decision might jeopardize a long-held Republican seat.

Trump Flexes Influence in Texas Senate Runoff

Incumbent Sen. John Cornyn faces a challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in a primary runoff. The decision has caused varied reactions among Senate Republicans. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, expressed significant disappointment.

“I think that this puts that seat in jeopardy,” she remarked, noting, “How does that help strengthen the president’s hand when we lose a state like Texas?”

The winner will compete against Texas state Rep. James Talarico, who has substantial support from influential Democrats like former President Barack Obama.

Paxton vs. Cornyn: GOP Perspectives

Despite historical trends favoring Republicans, many believe Cornyn is the safer choice. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., continues to support Cornyn.

“I do believe we are going to pull Texas, but I think John Cornyn was the safest bet,” Daines stated.

Cornyn criticized Paxton for his past scandals and argued that if Paxton wins, he could burden the GOP.

“It is now time for Texas Republican voters to decide if they want a strong nominee,” Cornyn advised, trusting Texas Republicans to make the right choice.

Paxton’s strategist, Nick Maddux, defended Paxton’s record.

“This is the only talking point the Cornyn campaign has,” Maddux countered. “Ken Paxton will be the Republican nominee for this fall, and we are ready to unite the party.”

Internal GOP Disagreements

The GOP faces strong opposition from Talarico, and Trump’s Paxton endorsement has amplified tensions within the party. Senate Majority Leader John Thune supported Cornyn and believes in his capability.

“Senator Cornyn is a principled conservative,” Thune noted. “He is a very effective senator for the state of Texas.”

As Election Day unfolds, Cornyn and Paxton prepare for their final matchup. Many Republicans remain cautious about siding with Paxton, given potential liabilities.
