Rising Temperatures and Invasive Species Threaten the Mediterranean Sea

Climate change is drastically transforming the Mediterranean Sea. Scientists warn about the warming waters leading to ecological crises. The main culprits are oil, coal, and gas emissions. These changes harm the biodiversity that local communities rely on.

The Mediterranean’s Changing Climate

The Mediterranean is a climate change hot spot. It is expected to warm by 2 to 6 degrees Celsius (3.6 to 10.8 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2100. The Mediterranean Experts on Climate and Environmental Change, an independent network of scientists, predict more frequent and extreme heat waves.

The sea’s enclosed nature means warmth cannot escape. Ronan McAdam, an oceanographer with the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change, highlights this issue.

Invasive Species Multiply

Rising temperatures invite invasive species like the spotted puffer fish. This fish is considered a major predator. These species migrate toward France and Spain through the Suez Canal.

The U.N. General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean tracks this trend. It reports a significant increase in invasive species since the early 2000s. For instance, the lionfish first appeared in 2012 and has expanded rapidly westward.

The eastern Mediterranean becomes unsuitable for native species. Cyprus felt the earliest impacts, with the lionfish supplanting local species like the red mullet. Rabbitfish also disrupt habitats by consuming algae.

Efforts to Combat Invasive Species

An estimated 1,000 invasive species exist in the Mediterranean, and 800 are well-established. The eastern Mediterranean’s shallows lost 93% of their mollusk population. The Adriatic coast saw mussels die off in waters exceeding 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit).

Azzuro’s institute launched a campaign to warn about invasive species. Puffer fish pose health risks due to their toxicity. The lionfish has poisonous spikes.

Possible Solutions

Scientists are finding ways for communities to manage. One approach is to commercialize edible invasive species and pay fishers to remove inedible ones.

Piero Genovesi Papik, a zoologist, suggests enforceable treaties to treat ballast waters. This action could cut alien species by 95 to 99%. Another strategy involves treating ship hulls to prevent hitchhiking species.

Fishing policies are also adapting. Enhancing the growth of robust native species like mollusks may help restore balance. The challenge is to discover innovative methods to restore these ecosystems.
