This resolution expressed solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza and accused Israel of ethnic cleansing, sparking controversy among local Jewish residents.

Stephen London, a Jewish resident, began paying attention to the city’s politics after the resolution, questioning its relevance to Richmond’s local issues. The resolution attracted criticism from Jewish community leaders in the Bay Area, who argued it glorified Hamas and demonized Israel during a period of mourning for Jewish residents.

In 2025, Mayor Martinez’s involvement in the People’s Conference for Palestine in Detroit further fueled criticism. His statements and actions, including wearing a controversial hat and making comparisons to Palestinians, drew backlash. The situation escalated when Martinez shared offensive posts on LinkedIn about the Bondi Beach massacre, leading the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) to call for his resignation.

The posts were deemed antisemitic, leading to outrage and prompting Martinez to apologize on Facebook for not fully understanding what he reposted. In his apology, he acknowledged the need for personal reflection and committed to addressing the communities he harmed.

The controversy affected Martinez’s political standing, with the Richmond Progressive Alliance choosing to support Councilmember Claudia Jimenez for the next mayoral election. The decision marked a shift in local political endorsements, possibly to distance the organization from Martinez’s actions.

Tyler Gregory, CEO of JCRC, emphasized the importance of strategic responses from the Jewish community concerning elected officials’ actions. He advocates working with officials on community issues while addressing instances of antisemitism decisively.

While Richmond faces its challenges, Stephen London expressed relief that the situation hasn’t escalated like in New York City, where similar debates have occurred involving politicians like Zohran Mamdani.
