In Las Vegas, before becoming a renowned WWE champion, Rey Mysterio earned his initial opportunities in the wrestling arena with AAA. He made his debut at the inaugural Triplemania event in 1993 as Rey Misterio Jr. Mysterio teamed with Volador and Misterioso to compete against Tony Arce, Vulcano, and Rocco Valente, collectively known as Los Destructores.
Fast forward over thirty years, AAA is now part of the WWE fold, and Mysterio has ascended to the role of general manager for AAA. Today, he’s slated to headline Triplemania 34 Night 1, hosted in Las Vegas.
“It’s a very special moment for me in so many ways,” Mysterio shared with OutKick Dropkick. “Being the new GM of AAA and reflecting on the company that originally opened doors for me in ’92 makes this journey incredible.”
Mysterio reminisced about his participation in the first Triplemania in 1993. Back then, AAA was pivotal in shaping his career. Now, he heads the organization, managing multifaceted responsibilities. One of those tasks extended to orchestrating a match against Omos, the towering wrestler set to face Mysterio.
This Triplemania marks a historic event as the first time AAA hosts a two-night affair, with additional matches in Las Vegas and Mexico City on Sunday. Mysterio’s feud with the giant Omos promises resolution Friday night. Previously, Omos had been suspended after injuring Galeno and launching attacks on Mysterio in August, assisted by Dominik Mysterio.
“I’ve felt Omos’ power,” Mysterio said. “He’s strong, intimidating. But I’m unfazed. Wrestling against larger opponents is nothing new for me. I’ve faced larger challengers since I was a kid.”
Mysterio’s aim as GM is clear: establish authority in the AAA roster. Mysterio voiced that no Luchador should try overpowering the GM, as they must recognize and respect boundaries.
The stakes are high for the match against Omos. A loss for Mysterio would mean reinstatement for Omos to the AAA roster. Conversely, should Mysterio triumph, Omos will face a permanent ban.
Triplemania 34 Night 1 occurs at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Friday evening, with Night 2 scheduled at Arena CDMX on Sunday. Both events commence at 10 p.m. ET and will be available for viewing on YouTube.
