Research Links Microplastics with Severe Heart Attack Risk

Patients facing severe heart attacks appear to have notably higher levels of micro- and nanoplastics in their blood, according to research from Italy. This study analyzed blood samples from 61 individuals undergoing angiograms, a procedure to evaluate blood vessels for irregularities.

Italian researchers found that approximately 84% of patients experiencing acute, severe heart attacks had detectable micro- and nanoplastics in their blood. Comparatively, plastic was found in only 40% of those with chronic heart disease and 32% of individuals with normal coronary arteries.

Dr. Raffaele Marfella from the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli in Naples led the research, published in the European Heart Journal. Polyethylene, commonly used in plastic bags and bottles, was present in 97% of patients testing positive for microplastics.

“This study adds to emerging research showing the potential role of micro- and nanoplastics in heart disease,” said Michelle Routhenstein, a preventive cardiology dietitian, to Fox News Digital.

Despite the significance, the findings should be evaluated within the broader context of environmental health challenges, Routhenstein advised, who was not part of the study.

“While these findings are interesting and highlight the importance of paying attention to environmental factors that may contribute to inflammation and blood vessel injury, they do not prove that plastics cause heart attacks,” Routhenstein stated.

Past research has also detected microplastics in arterial plaque, she noted, although the study faced limitations. Smoking history was identified as the strongest predictor of detectable plastic particles in the blood.

“This was an observational study, so it can only show an association, not cause and effect,” she stated. “It also included a relatively small group of patients from one country, so we can’t assume the findings apply to everyone.”

Other factors, such as smoking and air pollution, relate to cardiovascular disease and higher plastic exposure, complicating the study’s data separation.

To mitigate potential risks, experts suggest minimizing microplastic exposure. Heating food in glass or ceramic, instead of plastic, is recommended.

“I would take inventory of your regular sources of microplastic exposure and see where you can reduce or swap them for better alternatives,” said Routhenstein. “For example, replace plastic food storage containers with glass ones.”

Additional precautions are advised during meal preparation and water consumption.

“When microwaving or reheating food, use glass or ceramic containers instead of plastic,” she recommended. “It’s also a good idea to limit plastic water bottles and single-use plastic containers, especially when they’re exposed to heat. Think of reducing plastic exposure as one piece of an overall heart-healthy lifestyle.”
