In the northern Kentucky town of Burlington, Representative Thomas Massie is preparing for a crucial public event. This gathering comes just a little over a week before voters decide his political fate. Massie, a Republican known for his disagreements with President Trump, confronts Ed Gallrein, his Trump-endorsed challenger.
Recently, as Massie stood near the Boone County Courthouse, a boy offered him a piece of Pez candy. Accepting it with a smile, Massie remarked, “You know, President Trump hands out endorsements like you hand out candy. Just not to me.” The comment highlighted Trump’s support for Gallrein, which serves as a response to Massie’s frequent opposition to the president.
Massie has voted against key measures, including Trump’s tax proposal, citing fiscal concerns. He has also opposed military actions in Iran and criticized financial aid to Israel, deeming it a poor use of taxpayer money. Notably, he played a significant role in pushing for the release of the Epstein files, which Trump resisted.
The president has expressed his desire to replace Massie, referring to him with derogatory terms. Trump chose Gallrein, a veteran dairy farmer and retired Navy SEAL captain, to fill the role. Massie, who has not faced serious competition since his 2012 election win, now confronts a serious challenge. According to Massie’s internal polling, the race remains close, though public polls indicate Gallrein may have a slight edge.
