In Jackson, Georgia, Republican Rep. Mike Collins won the GOP Senate nomination in a challenging race that went into overtime. Collins, an outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump, saw victory on Tuesday against Derek Dooley, a former college football coach. This sets up a November match against Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff, pivotal for the GOP’s slim Senate majority.
Collins currently serves his second term in Georgia’s 10th Congressional District. He owns a trucking company with his wife and is the son of the late Rep. Mac Collins. Dooley, a lawyer and former University of Tennessee football coach, had strong support from his lifelong friend, Gov. Brian Kemp, who often joined him on the campaign trail.
Despite Kemp’s backing, Collins emphasized his MAGA credentials and eventually received Trump’s endorsement. After the endorsement, Collins expressed confidence, stating it demonstrated Trump’s faith in their ability to win the race.
Dooley, positioned as an outsider, criticized political insiders and targeted careerism and corruption in Congress. He asserted that voters seek a change from the usual political routine in Washington.
Both candidates carried some political baggage. Collins faced scrutiny by the House Ethics Committee regarding an intern’s employment, which he denied was improper. A later incident concerning a campaign staffer’s inappropriate social media post resulted in an apology from Collins.
Not having a record is not gonna win this thing. But having a record of results will.— Mike Collins
Concerns also surfaced about Dooley’s involvement in a ‘pay-to-play’ scandal, although both he and Kemp denied any wrongdoing. Meanwhile, Sen. Ossoff has prepared a strong campaign fund to boost his re-election efforts.
In the broader context, Trump’s endorsement has played a significant role in GOP primaries recently, although it was not sufficient in some instances. In Iowa, Randy Feenstra’s campaign fell short despite Trump’s last-minute backing.
Yet, Trump found success with Pamela Evette in South Carolina, who secured a spot in the governor’s race primary. Sen. Lindsey Graham also avoided a runoff in South Carolina with Trump’s endorsement, overcoming multiple challengers.
Mike Collins aims to unify Republican voters as the general election nears, focusing on maintaining a Republican presence in the Senate.
